How the Magic Happens: Step-by-Step
Getting your dream lips is a fun, easy process! Here is exactly what you can expect when you sit in my chair:
1. The Custom Map & Color Match:
First, I map out your lips to bring perfect balance to your features. Then comes the fun part: custom-blending your dream shade based on your skin tone, natural lip colour, and how vibrant you want to go!
2. The Gentle Lip Tinting:
Using a super-fine, high-tech cosmetic needle, I gently shade the pigment into the very top layers of your skin. It’s all about creating a soft, pixelated, airbrushed finish—never solid or blocky.
3. The Healing Dance:Days 1–7.
Right after your session, your lips will look bright and a little plumped (hello, free lip filler effect!). Over the next week, they will lightly flake and shed, softening by about 40–50% to reveal a gorgeous, translucent tint.
4. The Perfection Session:6–8 Weeks Later.
Everyone’s skin heals a little differently. At your touch-up, I check out how your lips took the colour, fill in any light spots, and make sure your tint is absolutely perfect and locked in!
Quick Q&A: Everything You Need to Know
How long does this fabulous look last?
Because I use soft, premium pigments and a light-handed technique, your results will last anywhere from 12 to 24 months before beautifully and evenly fading out. A quick yearly colour boost will keep them looking fresh!
Does it hurt?
Honestly, it is way more comfortable than you’d think! Because we use an ultra-gentle, advanced cosmetic machine that lightly taps pigment into the skin (instead of deep tattooing), trauma is kept to an absolute minimum. Most of my clients describe the sensation as a light, vibrating tickle or an electric toothbrush feeling. I promise to keep you super relaxed throughout the whole session!
Can it fix dark or cool-toned lips?
Yes, absolutely! This is a specialised process called Lip Neutralisation. We start by using warm, colour-correcting tones (like soft orange or peach) to balance out any cool, blue, or purple undertones. Once that heals, we can add your favourite pinks or corals! It may require more than 2 sessions.
Prep & Aftercare: The Golden Rules
Getting the best healed results is a total team effort! Your pre-care and post-care routine plays a massive role in how well your lips hold onto that gorgeous pigment.
Pre-Care: how to prep for your appointment to make sure your lips are a flawless canvas for your session, follow these easy steps:
• Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! Start intensely moisturizing your lips with lip balm or Aquaphor a full week before your appointment. Pigment blends beautifully into smooth, hydrated skin, but clings stubbornly to dry patches.
• Gently Exfoliate: Give your lips a soft scrub (a simple sugar-and-coconut-oil mix works perfectly!) 2–3 days before your session to shed any dead skin. Do not scrub the night before or the morning of—we don’t want the skin raw!
• The Cold Sore Rule (Crucial!): If you have ever had a cold sore in your life—even just one, years ago—the stimulation from the procedure can trigger an outbreak. To prevent this, please consult your doctor or pharmacist for a preventative anti-viral prescription (like Aciclovir) to start taking 3 days before your appointment.
• Skip the Stimulants: Avoid caffeine, energy drinks, and alcohol for 24 hours before your session. Also, skip aspirin, ibuprofen, or Vitamin E supplements, as these can thin your blood and cause minor bleeding, which pushes the pigment right back out.
Post-Care: Loving Your Lips While They Heal
The healing process takes about 5 to 7 days. During this time, treat your lips like royalty!
1. Keep Them Clean & Dry:
Days 1–3.
Gently blot your lips with a clean, damp cotton pad every few hours on Day 1 to remove any lymph fluid. Avoid getting them excessively wet in the shower, and use a straw for all drinks. No hot, spicy, or super salty foods that might sting!
2. Moisturise, But Don’t Suffocate:
Days 2–7.
Once your lips start to feel dry or tight, apply a very thin layer of the aftercare balm I give you a lip balm. Never use your bare fingers to spread! Keep them moist, but don’t cake it on.
3. The No-Picking Pledge:
Days 3–7.
As your lips heal, they will begin to flake and peel. It might look a little patchy, and it might itch. Do not pick, scratch, or scrub the flakes off! Let them drop off naturally. Picking will pull the pigment right out of the skin, leaving blank spots.
4. Protect the Pigment:
Weeks 1–4.
Keep your lips out of direct sunlight, sun beds, saunas, steam rooms, and swimming pools for at least 2 weeks. Once fully peeled, always wear a lip balm with SPF to keep your colour from fading prematurely!
What to avoid entirely until healed: Lip fillers (wait 4 weeks before or after your session), makeup on or around the lips, kissing (sorry!), and aggressive dental work.
BEFORE AND AFTER
FAQ
Lip tattooing is suitable for most clients of all ages and lifestyles. “It’s for anyone over 18 who wants a subtle lip colour.” It can be especially good for older ladies who lose pigment in their lips as they age. Any problems will be seeded out in a consultation. Not recommend this for anyone with too much lip filler, as colour can be extremely difficult to take.
Depending on the treatment and lifestyle factors, lip tattooing can last anywhere from 1-3 years. The pigment will fade naturally and lighten over this time. It is recommended a colour boost procedure every 6-12 months.
